Chapter 10: Family Vacation
I went down in my socks and my coat.
I didn't open the door.
I talked to him through the glass with the bakery's closed sign between us.
"You're drunk, Peter. The boys are asleep. Go home."
"I'm not that drunk." He set the bottle on the step to prove it. It fell over. "Okay. I'm a little drunk."
"What about your mother?"
He put his forehead on the glass.
"She picked you," he said. "You know that. You heard it."
"I heard it."
"She came to the diner three times before I ever did. She sat in your section. She watched you. Then she told me there was a girl I should meet."
My whole body went cold.
I remembered her.
An older woman in pearls who tipped exactly fifteen percent and never looked up from her tea.
"And you just did what she said."
"I always do what she says." He laughed, and it came out wet. "But then I liked you. I did, Lil. You were funny. You read in the break room. You were nicer to me than anybody."
