Chapter 11: The Uncle Comes
My uncle came up the road on Saturday at noon, on his good brown mule, with a sack of apples on the saddle and a present tied in a cloth.
I watched him from the cloister arch.
I had my cap in my pocket and my hair bare.
I wore a borrowed skirt from the women's side that came to my ankle, and a shawl over my brother's coat.
It was the first time in five years that I had stood in a yard in a skirt.
I felt every eye in the fortress.
Nobody said a word.
The cook had pressed my hand in the kitchen that morning.
The old woman with the keys had tied a ribbon in my sister's braid.
Sixty people who had called me Xabier for nine days had begun, without speaking of it, to call me Itziar.
I stood very straight and held my sister's hand.
Amaia's was ice-cold, and she was shaking.
"Say nothing," I said into her ear.
"Smile if you can.
"I'll be beside you."
"I can't," she whispered.
"I know.
"Do it anyway."
Pantxo got down at the gate with a great sigh and a groan, one fat hand on the saddle.
His round red face was wet already.
He had been weeping before he reached the top of the pass.
He always did.
"My girls," he said.
