Chapter 24: Twelve of Twelve
The dean read the results standing at the front of the testing room, with all twelve of us in the first two rows.
She did not read them quickly.
"Ten of twelve were required to pass," she said. "I have a sheet in my hand with twelve names."
Nobody moved.
"All twelve passed. Two of you with honors."
The girl with the baby screamed.
The baby, in her carrier, screamed with her.
The man in work boots sat down on a desk and put his face in both hands.
The boy in the back row said, "Say it again," and the dean said it again.
The girl by the window was crying. Her brother, in the seat behind her, had a bandage over one eyebrow and a grin that went from ear to ear.
I stood in the aisle with the sheet in my hand and could not feel my feet.
Caleb had come in at the back, and he did not say anything.
He lifted both arms over his head and kept them there.
"The Bridge program will continue," the dean said. "The interim board of the Foundation has voted to fund it for ten years. The instructor who left has agreed to return, if Miss Weatherford will have them."
"I'll have them," I said. "On Saturday they can hold mats."
That got a laugh.
The lawyer's office was on the ninth floor, with the same long walnut table.
I sat there at two o'clock with my father, my brothers and a stack of paper.
My mother was not in the room. She had resigned from the Foundation on Tuesday, and her own lawyer had advised her not to come.
