Chapter 15: Brothers
Aldric reined in beside Seren's wagon and looked down at him.
Then he smiled.
It was the warm smile he used on the council, and it came on.
"Seren," he said. "Thank every god. They told me you were dead."
He swung down and opened his arms, in front of a thousand of his soldiers.
Seren stayed where he was, on the wagon bed.
"You told them I was dead," he said. "The day before it happened."
Aldric's arms came down slowly.
The smile stayed.
He turned to the men instead.
"My brother has been a prisoner in the Varran camp for twelve days," he said. "I don't blame him for anything he says now."
"Whatever they've done to him."
Somebody near the back made a noise that wasn't quite a laugh.
Aldric looked at the half loaf in the mill boy's hand.
"What is that?"
"Bread, Highness."
Aldric knocked it out of the boy's hand.
It rolled under the wagon wheel into the mud.
"Varran bread," he said loudly. "From the army that drowned your brothers at Harl Bridge. Poisoned, for all you know. Spit it out."
