Chapter 16: The King at the Ford
The king hadn't pitched a pavilion this time.
He sat his horse on the east bank of the ford with his twenty lords around him.
Two hundred household knights in black enamel sat behind him.
Across the water, the Caerwen army stood along the west bank in its grey-green tents and watched.
On the slope above the ford, eight thousand Varrans stood in their ranks with their bows unstrung.
And in the middle of the open ground, on foot, alone, stood their general.
Corvus had taken his sword belt off and left it on the grass ten feet behind him.
Seren came up out of the ford beside him with his boots full of river.
"You left your sword on the ground," he said.
"He's my king. I'm not going to draw on him."
"He's going to draw on you."
"I know."
Lucan looked down at the two of them from his tall grey horse, and his long fingers played with the reins.
"My general," he said. "And his clever little gift."
"Majesty."
"You've been busy. You took my captain. You took my cousin. You took my army."
"I'm told my army has stopped answering to my orders."
