Chapter 17: No One Counting
Garrow had kept his word about the cot.
It stood where the ash one had been, a squat oak thing with iron braces at every corner.
It was wide enough for two men, if one of them was Seren.
Someone had tied a red ribbon round the nearest leg.
"I'll kill him," Corvus said in the doorway.
"You won't. He's got one good arm left and he spent it on this."
The lords were still sitting in the king's tent across the camp.
They could hear them through the canvas walls, arguing in twenty voices, and every so often one voice rising over the rest.
Nobody had come for them.
Nobody was sitting outside with a writing board.
Corvus tied the flap shut himself.
Then he stood with his back to it and looked at Seren.
He hadn't put his sword belt back on since the ford.
He looked strange without it, lighter and more dangerous.
"Your king said..." Seren started.
"He's not my king."
Corvus came across the tent and put his big hands on either side of Seren's face.
"I knelt to that man for fourteen years," he said. "And he looked at me like a horse he'd paid too much for."
"I'm not going to talk about him tonight."
"Then what do you want to do?"
Corvus didn't answer.
He showed him.
Corvus didn't answer.
He showed him.
His mouth came down on Seren's, open and hot, one huge hand cupping the back of Seren's skull.
Seren couldn't turn away, and he didn't want to.
He kissed Corvus back like he'd been holding his breath since the ford and Corvus was air.
Corvus's other hand found the front of Seren's borrowed shirt and pulled, and buttons scattered across the tent floor.
Seren laughed against his mouth, and Corvus swallowed it.
"No more of that," Corvus said, rough, pulling back just far enough to look at him.
"No more of what?"
"Laughing like I'm not going to wreck you."
"Promises, General."
Corvus's eyes darkened.
He stripped Seren's shirt off his shoulders and threw it somewhere.
His own shirt followed, yanked over his head.
Then his hands were on Seren, big and hot, sliding down his ribs, gripping his hips, pulling him against Corvus's body.
