Chapter 15: The Cellar

Emmett took the page out of my hand and read it twice.

"Those two stood up in the Hollow and called Ransom to trial," he said.

"And they watched the pack house door that night," I said. "They told my father they'd do it themselves."

"And by morning it was open," Dagny said.

Emmett sat down hard at the table.

"I've stood next to those two at every valley meeting for ten years," he said. "They always smelled wrong to me. Like a coat that doesn't fit. I thought it was age."

"Twelve Renderings," Dagny said. "Nine on my shelves. Mira's ten."

She turned the page so we could all see the two names.

"Eleven and twelve."

I looked at my father.

"The cause isn't paid anymore," I said. "Blackfen's elders searched that house to hide what's under it. That's Accord business."

"So we go," he said.

"We go. Hunt and Cold Spring together." I put my hand on the map. "And nobody dies. Not the elders. Not anybody."

My father looked at Emmett.

"Cold Spring will come," Emmett said. "Tell me when."

We went on the twenty-eighth, at two in the morning.

The midwife sat in the rocking chair by our stove with Josie asleep in her lap and a shotgun across the arms of the chair.

"Go on," she said. "I've held worse."

Twelve hunters walked up the north draw on foot in the snow.

Ten Cold Spring wolves came down off the ridge to meet us without a sound.

The stone house sat dark at the top of the draw.

Except it wasn't dark.

There was a light in the kitchen.

And a truck backed up to the porch with its tailgate down and its engine off.

Dagny lifted a hand. Everyone stopped.

Through the kitchen window I could see two old men in barn coats carrying a wooden crate between them.
