Chapter 32: The Table That Kept His Place
The Moon King had promised to void the marriage before the month turned.
Now every ruler who had knelt in the temple was taking a seat at Aquas's table to decide whether that promise still ruled them.
Aquas pulled the chair at his right out from under Durn's elbow.
'Sit,' he told Lucien. 'Before she spreads a map on it.'
Durn grunted and moved her rolled charts to the far end without complaint.
Lucien sat. He kept his left arm still, the way he had since the arrow.
Then he leaned close enough that only Aquas could hear.
'Can he do it?' Lucien said. 'Can the moon court actually unmake us?'
Aquas had been waiting all evening for him to ask.
He stood and walked the length of the table.
The head chair sat empty at the far end, the one the Moon King would have taken.
Aquas put his hand on its back and left it where it was.
'If no one at this table speaks without being told to,' he said, 'then I take the compact back to the shelf pass and hold it with the watch alone. No courts. No seals. Just the pass.'
