Chapter 16: Live

Miles's POV

Kate's text said: Come to my flat. Now. Don't be angry.

I was there in twelve minutes.

Brooke sat at the end of Kate's kitchen counter.

Her phone was propped against the fruit bowl, beside a small ring light she must have carried up the stairs.

She stood when I came in.

She was thinner than at the party. She wore no makeup and her honey hair was in a rubber band.

"Hi, Miles."

"What is this?"

"I'm going live in five minutes," she said. "On my page. I wanted you to hear it before anyone else does."

Kate leaned against the stove with her arms crossed, giving me a look that said she'd already argued this.

"You owe me nothing," I said.

"I owe you the truth in front of four hundred thousand people."

"Why tonight?"

"Because your video has five million views, and every comment under it is about me." Her mouth twisted. "And most of them are right."

I sat down on the stool across from her.

Her hands were shaking, so she folded them under her arms.

"I'm going to read from my notes," she said. "Don't help me. If you help me, it won't count."

She tapped the screen.

A red dot came on.

She sat straight and looked into the lens, and her whole face changed.

It became the bright camera face I had watched her practice for years.

Then she dropped it.

"Hi," she said, and her voice was small and plain. "I'm Brooke. Most of you know me from the proposal video."

The viewer count went from nine to forty to nine hundred in a minute.

"I'm not here to sell anything," she said. "I'm here to tell you what happened at the engagement party, because I didn't tell anyone, and I helped it happen."
