Chapter 10: Tiernan's Ledger
Tiernan's POV
The Bureau of Returns kept its hearing room in the basement, next to the boiler.
There was a long table, a water jug, and a supervisor in her sixties who had signed my paychecks for eight years and never once raised her voice.
Mrs. Fairclough sat across from me with her handbag on her knees.
She had worn gray, and she had cried in the car on the way over. I know, because she'd told me at the door.
"Mr. Rhodes," the supervisor said. "You've seen the complaint. Is it accurate?"
"Some of it."
"Which part?"
"I kissed a claimant on the Fairclough dock on Friday night. After hours. Not during a wish."
Mrs. Fairclough made a small sound into her handkerchief.
The supervisor wrote it down.
"You understand that a clerk is a witness and may not take part in the household's business."
"I understand."
"And the claimant is twenty."
"Yes."
"Was she asked? Was she pressured?"
"She asked me first," I said. "She asked for something else, and I said yes, and the rest happened. I'd say it again."
The supervisor looked up.
I hadn't meant to say that last part, and I didn't take it back.
"I see," she said.
Mrs. Fairclough leaned forward.
"May I say something?"
"Please."
"I am not angry." Her voice was soft and shaking. "My daughter is very ill. She is allowed some happiness. My only worry is that he isn't an impartial witness anymore, and she's in a hundred days where everything matters."
