Chapter 11: Coward

Seren's POV

For a week after the hearing, Tiernan was perfect.

He arrived at seven for every wish and took notes in his small neat hand.

He said "Mrs. Fairclough" and "Miss Fairclough" and nothing else.

He never looked at me for longer than a log entry.

On the eighth night, I walked into the Bureau annex alone at closing time.

My heart was pounding wrong, and I still had my coat on.

I found him locking a drawer.

"Coward," I said.

He turned around.

"Excuse me?"

"You said yes on a dock. You said it in a boathouse with your hands on me. Then Deborah files a form and you turn into a filing cabinet." My voice shook. "A week, Tiernan."

"The Bureau gave me a formal warning."

"I know what they gave you. I'm asking what you did with the yes."

He put the key in his pocket very slowly.

"I'm trying not to be the reason you get hurt," he said.

"By staying away from me? I'm dying. I don't have time for you to be noble."

"Don't say that."

"Why? It's the only thing in the room that's true." I stepped closer. "What are you afraid of?"

He looked down, his shoulders tense.

"Your mother pulled my sister's file three days before the hearing," he said. "She's been reading how it ended. I don't know why, and I don't like not knowing why."

"And you were going to tell me when?"

"When I had something to tell."

"You have a file with Deborah's name on it. That's something."

He rubbed his face with both hands.

"I'm afraid," he said, "that I'll do for you what I did for her. I'll stand at the door and write it down."

"Then don't stand at the door."

For a moment he didn't move.

Then he crossed the room in two strides.

His hands were in my hair and his mouth was on mine before I had finished speaking.

We didn't make it to the car.

We made it to the carriage house, because Winifred had gone to bed at nine.
