Chapter 12: Forty-Three

The Harbor Gala filled the pier pavilion with paper lanterns and two hundred people in their good coats.

Over the stage hung a banner with my sister's face on it.

I wore my mother's gray cardigan over a borrowed dress, and I held a single index card.

It was wish forty.

I want five minutes on the gala stage to tell the town the truth.

My mother had read it aloud in the kitchen that morning, and she had said "Granted" a little too quickly.

Now she sat at the front table with Cora and my father, smiling at the room.

Tiernan stood against the pavilion wall, with his tablet down by his thigh.

Winifred sat three rows back, her knitting bag in her lap.

Above Cora's head, the lantern light showed me 53.

The master of ceremonies said, "And now, a few words from Cora's sister," and the applause was warm and curious.

I walked up the steps.

The microphone was too high, so I tilted it down.

"Good evening," I said. "I'm Seren Fairclough."

A few people smiled.

"Some of you filmed me the night I came home. I'd like to tell you what you didn't film."

The smiles got smaller.

"I have a failing heart. I've been home thirty-nine days, and in that time I've been asked to drink tea, play a duet, and take my seat at every meal." I looked out at the faces. "I've asked for a heart specialist, and the first appointment my mother found is in December. After the hundred days are over."
