Chapter 23: Two Names

Sawyer stared at his grandmother.

"Kanab," he said. "The town where three men left you on a curb."

"The very same."

"You want to celebrate the book there."

"I want to sit on that curb with a glass of something," Dot said, "and sign my name as many times as they'll let me."

He looked at me for help.

I didn't give him any.

"I'll bring the camera," I said.

That summer, I moved to Denver.

I found a one-bedroom over a bike shop, four blocks from Dot's porch, with a kitchen the size of a phone booth.

Shay got a job on the cardiac floor of a Denver hospital and took the couch for two months while she looked for a place.

She never looked very hard.

In July she bought a second key cut and painted the top of it with pink nail polish.

"For when you forget yours," she said.

Sawyer didn't make partner.

He told me about it on a Tuesday, sitting on my kitchen counter, eating cereal from the box.

"They said I'd shown poor judgment in the spring."

"What did you say?"
