Chapter 16: What I Want

The flashlight belonged to a park security guard in a yellow rain jacket.

I had my dress down and my coat on by the time I rolled the window two inches.

Dane sat very still in the passenger seat with his flannel buttoned wrong and his hands on his knees.

Hana lay on the back seat with a blanket over her head.

"Lot closes at ten," the guard said.

"Yes, officer."

"It's ten-forty," he said.

"We lost track of time," I said.

He shone the light across Dane's red beard, and across the fogged glass, and across the blanket in the back.

I watched him decide he was not paid enough.

"Drive safe," he said, and walked away.

Nobody breathed until his taillights had gone.

Then Hana sat up with the blanket around her shoulders and laughed until she cried.

Dane laughed too, helplessly, with both hands over his face.

I laughed, and drove down the hill with the heater roaring and my knees still loose.

I did not take them to my house.

I took them to Division Street, and I parked in front of the Craftsman with the porch light off, and I unlocked my office door.
