Chapter 23: The Night Before

It was the twenty-first of August, the night before the wedding, and the bungalow smelled of lavender and hot water.

Hana had lit eleven candles along the rim of the claw-foot tub.

The plumber had come in March, and the tub no longer groaned, and the three of us fit in it if nobody minded knees.

I lay back against Dane's chest with the water to my collarbones.

Hana sat across from me, facing us, with her feet in my lap.

Nobody had said who was in charge.

"I want to try something," Hana said.

"Tell me."

"Close your eyes."

I closed them.

I heard her shift, and the water move, and then her hands were in my hair.

She had a cup, and she poured warm water over my scalp, slowly, from the crown to the nape.

I let out a long sigh.

"I've been doing this to clay for fifteen years," she said. "You should see how it holds."

Her fingers worked in the shampoo.

She massaged my temples with her thumbs, and my skull, and the tight place at the back of my neck where six years of other people's marriages had lived.

Dane's hands came around me under the water.

They rested on my ribs, and then they slid up and cupped my breasts, and his thumbs moved in slow circles.
