Chapter 24: Sixty-Seven Candles
Frank Hausler's sixty-seventh birthday cost about two hundred dollars, and most of it was ribs.
Nate had been smoking them in the backyard in Fox Chapel since six that morning.
The aide from the Foundation's program had the weekend off, so Nate had gotten Frank up and shaved him himself, the old way.
Frank had complained about the razor the whole time, in four separate words.
By five o'clock the dining room table was set for nine.
Frank sat at the head of it, in his own chair, in a clean flannel shirt and his Pirates cap.
Nobody had asked him to take it off.
Nate sat at his right hand, because Frank had pointed at the chair and then at him until he did.
Leah sat across from Nate, still pink from the sun at the site.
The foreman was there with his wife, and the union man, who had come in a taxi with a bottle of rye.
Leah's sister sat at the far end with her phone face down beside her plate, and Brett sat next to her.
The lawyer had sent flowers and a card that called Frank "Mr. Hausler" on the envelope.
