Chapter 15: Nothing to Sign

The reporter's pen stopped moving, and she looked at me.

I stood up from the wall.

"Page nine," I said. "Blood is proven by a laboratory approved by a majority of the trustees. Which of you approved Torsten's?"

The banker studied his hands.

"I never saw a lab," said the old lawyer, slowly.

"Neither did I," said my father.

"The report is accredited," Torsten said.

"It's accredited by nobody in this room." I turned to the table. "My brother's hospital has a lab. Barrett can have a technician here in twenty minutes, and you can draw samples from my mother and me in front of every one of you."

"And Eliana?" said the woman who owned the marina.

Torsten leaned forward and lowered his voice to its kindest.

"Eliana is the one who needs protecting," he said. "I can fix this today. Hattie signs the release in clause seven, the forty percent stays in the family, and Eliana keeps every dollar she was raised to expect."

He slid a page across the table toward me, the same page.

"Sign it," Torsten said gently. "For her sake."

I looked at Eliana.

She was white to the lips, and she nodded at me, once, and I knew she would have let me sign it.

That was what decided me.

"Eliana is my sister," I said, loud enough for the recorder. "She is my sister in every way that counts, and the only person in this building who has never lied to me. I'm not signing anything for anyone."

Behind me, one of my brothers said a word our mother would not have liked.

The old lawyer cleared his throat.

"I move that the trustees approve the hospital's laboratory," he said. "All in favor."

My father raised his hand first.

Then the old lawyer, and the marina woman, and, after a very long moment and a look at the reporter, the banker.

Four hands.

Torsten kept his own on the table and said nothing at all.

At eleven forty, Finbar unfolded his arms and left the room without looking back.
