Chapter 12: Before the Party
The side door opened behind me.
Ford and Clay came out into the hallway, and Tanner a few steps after them.
Kenzie straightened up and smiled at them.
"Go on," she said. "Tell her."
Then she walked past them, back into the noise, and the door swung shut on her.
The four of us stood by the window.
"Tell me what," I said.
Nobody answered.
"She said to ask what she asked you before the party. So I'm asking."
Clay looked at Ford.
Ford looked at the floor.
"She came to my house the week before," Ford said. "While you were at the camera shop."
"She sat on my porch steps and cried. She said she had a feeling you were going to leave. That you were always halfway gone."
"And she asked me, 'If Greer doesn't stay, will you stay with me?'"
My mouth had gone dry.
"What did you say?"
He made himself look at me.
"I said yes."
Clay's voice came out flat.
"She asked me at the library. Same words."
"Tanner?"
Tanner's ears were red.
"At the store," he said. "In the paint aisle. I said, 'Course I will, Kenz.' I didn't even think about it."
So she'd known.
Before the cake, before the crown, before she slid me the deck and let me draw that card.
She knew what three cards would say before she asked.
She'd just wanted me to read them.
Clay took his phone out again.
"There's something else."
He turned it toward me.
