The boardroom of Haverill Pictures was on the fortieth floor.

It had a table that sat twenty and a window that looked out over the whole city.

I had never been allowed in it.

I sat in a chair against the back wall with Beck beside me.

My mother had asked for a witness, and she hadn't said whose side.

Twelve directors sat around the table.

My father was at the head in a navy suit, thinner than a month ago.

A bandage still showed at his wrist where they'd taken blood.

My mother sat at his right hand in dark blue silk with her cast in a sling.

Roman and Griffin sat opposite, silent.

Coralie wasn't a director.

She stood by the door in white with her hands clasped, waiting.

"We'll come to order," said the oldest director, a gray man with half-moon glasses. "Item one. A motion to remove the chairman."

My father laughed.

It was a short, impatient laugh.

"This is a family dinner with minutes," he said. "I've built this studio."

"Your wife's father built it," the old man said. "You've run it."

"For thirty years."

"Which is the question."

I watched him look around the table.
