Chapter 12: The Letter

I did not wait to hear the rest.

I went back out through the side door, along the cold corridor and down the vestibule stair.

I leaned my forehead against the wall and tried to remember how to breathe.

"Gwen."

I knew the voice before I turned.

My brother Elis stood at the foot of the stair in his waxed field coat, with rain on his beard and a mud-spattered boot on the lowest step.

He had come in through the same open gate as Rhodri.

"You," I said.

"Gwen, I can explain," he said.

"You cut my hair."

"I did."

"You cut my hair in the back of a car before I could say yes," I said, "and you told me I would thank you."

He did not answer.

I felt my own voice shake, and I did not stop it.

"I have been bound in cloth for three weeks. I have lied to every boy in this school. I have been hunted and nearly drowned."

He flinched.

"And you did not ask me. You held a pair of shears at the back of my neck, and you decided."

"I was told to," Elis said.

"By whom?"

"Father."

The word sat in the cold air between us.

"Give me the letter," I said.

"You have it."

"I have the letter you let me carry. I want the one you didn't."

He stared at me.

Then, slowly, he put his hand inside his coat and drew out a second envelope, heavy and cream, sealed in red wax.
