Chapter 14: Scent

Cadoc crossed the floor in two strides and put his shoulder against the door.

He did not open it.

"It's the Captain's dormitory," he said, pleasantly, through the wood. "No Penhallow comes in after lights-out."

"I'm a witness under the Warden's rule," said the voice outside.

"The Warden's rule says no hand is raised in the Hall," Cadoc said. "This isn't the Hall. This is a bedroom, and you aren't invited."

There was a pause.

Then a scrape of boots, and a low laugh, and the older Penhallow's voice came again, softer.

"Three nights," he said. "I can wait three nights, Vaughan. I'm very good at it."

The footsteps went away.

We stood and listened to them go all the way down the east passage.

Then Cadoc slid the bolt, and the bar, and set his back to the door, and breathed out through his teeth.

"He'll be back," Iolo said.

"Yes."

"He wants to bond her before the Rite. If he can, he'll put his teeth in her himself."

"He can try," I said.

My voice was not as steady as I wanted.

I sat on the bunk with my hands between my knees, and I looked at the two of them.

Cadoc was breathing hard, with his fist against the wood.

Iolo stood at the window with his back to the glass, one scarred hand on the sill.

They had read what my father had written.

They had been chosen like horses.

I waited for the sulk and the resentment.

I waited for the cold little pause that comes when a man learns he was a plan.

"Stop it," I said.

"Stop what?" said Cadoc.

"Looking at me like that. Like I'm something you owe."

"You're not something we owe," said Iolo.

"I know."

"You're something we want."

It was the plainest thing he had ever said.
