Chapter 12: Her Yes

"Stay there," I said to the dock.

My voice shook, but it still carried.

"Nobody gets up until the sun does. Nobody follows me. Nobody sends a message."

I looked down at Silas, on his knees in the rain with his white face turned up.

"And you don't touch anyone I leave behind."

His mouth worked.

Nothing came out of it.

I turned and walked down the pier with Darius's coat dragging at my heels.

Eli and Nico fell in on either side of me, and Darius a step behind.

They did not touch me, and they did not speak.

Eli drove.

I sat in the back of the car with Darius's coat pulled to my chin, and the wipers beat time, and the harbor went by in smears of yellow light.

I said nothing to anyone for twenty minutes.

When we pulled up under the stone lodge, I got out and stood in the courtyard in the rain.

"Go to bed," I told Eli and Nico. "Both of you."

"Mara," Nico said.

"Please."

They went.

Darius stood a few feet from me with his hands at his sides.

His shirt was soaked through and clinging to the gauze on his back.

He had lost his color, and he looked at me, afraid I would leave again.

"I won't ask you for anything," he said. "I'll take you wherever you want to go. The city, your mother's, anywhere."

"Is that still your rule?"

"It's the only one I have."

"Then say it again."

His brows drew together.

"Nothing happens here unless you say it," I said. "Say it."

"Nothing happens here unless you say it."

I walked up to him.

He was so much taller than I was that I had to tilt my head all the way back.

The coat slipped off one shoulder, and I let it.

"I'm saying it," I said.

He did not move.

"I came back." I could hear my own breath. "I walked in that gate on my own feet, and I could have gone anywhere. Nobody made me. I want you, Darius, and I'm angry about it, and I want it anyway."

Something in his face broke open.

"Mara..."

"Don't talk," I said. "Not yet."

I took his shirt in both fists and pulled.

He bent his head, and I kissed him.

His mouth was hot and rough, and it opened under mine at once.
