Chapter 5: Teeth

The third blow split the bolt out of the wood.

The door swung inward and hit the wall, and Ronan stood in the frame with his shirt open and his big hands hanging loose.

He smelled of whiskey.

I had backed up until my calves touched the bed.

"There she is," he said.

I put my hands out in front of me, empty, and I made my voice come out level.

"Ronan, listen to me."

"I'm listening." He came in and kicked the door shut behind him. "I'm always listening, little wolf."

"Nico told me how the Claiming works."

He stopped, just for a beat.

"Did he."

"It only holds if I say yes. In front of the council." My heart was going so hard I thought he must hear it. "Out loud, with every head of every family watching me."

"So say it now and save us all some time."

"If you put a hand on me tonight, I will say no."

He laughed.

"I'll say no in that hall in front of everyone. And when Silas asks me why, I'll tell him it was you." I kept my eyes on his. "I'll show him the door you broke. I'll tell him you couldn't wait nine days."

The laugh dried up on his face.

I saw him think it through, slowly.

Silas was a careful man, and Silas would not forgive a nephew who spoiled a nine-day plan.

"You wouldn't," Ronan said.

"Try me."

For one long moment I believed it had worked.

His eyes went to my wrists, where the white hair had pushed up again, and I saw the same flicker I had seen in the cell, quick and uneasy, the same as the first day he had seen it.

Then his face closed, and the whiskey took the place of the thought.
