Chapter 28: The Vote
The woman from the transfer agent came up the stage steps with a grey lockbox and a stack of ballots.
She'd been sitting at a card table by the door all evening, and nobody had looked at her once.
Now six hundred people watched her set the box down on the white linen.
"One question on the ballot," she said. "Removal of Gerald Cromwell as a director and as chairman of the board."
She handed out the ballots by block.
Kestrel's to me. The block that had been my mother's, to me as well.
Berenice's to Berenice.
My father's, what was left of it, to my father.
She stopped in front of my sister.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Mercer. The ledger shows no shares in your name as of five this evening."
Marigold stared at her empty hands.
"I have fifteen percent," she said.
"The ledger shows no shares in your name, ma'am."
"Daddy."
My father was filling in his own ballot with his heavy fountain pen. He didn't look up.
Marigold sat back down with nothing in front of her.
It was the first time in her life she'd been at a table and not been handed anything.
