Chapter 18: The Convent Road
We rode out of the palace at a gallop, the Prince and I.
Six of Bastian's clerks rode behind us, and Bastian himself was nowhere.
He had gone for the Plaza Guard.
"Take the north road," he had said, in the doorway of the ballroom.
"It's the only road to the convent. Do not let her out of your sight."
I had not argued.
I had been on a horse twice in my life, and one of those had ended in a bramble thicket.
I rode the grey anyway.
She was fast and sure.
The red velvet was bunched round my thighs, and the night wind smelled of oranges and dust.
Alonso rode ahead of me.
He rode well. I had not known that.
He rode with his coat open and his hair streaming, and his face, in the moonlight, was white and set.
We found the carriage a league outside the city, at the crossroads by the old stone cross.
It was a closed black carriage with the Queen's lamps unlit.
It was drawn by four horses and flanked by six mounted guards in royal gray, and it was moving at a trot.
