Chapter 19: Ansel's Word
Dally's POV
Ansel told me at my father's kitchen table at seven in the morning.
He stood in the door with the sea still in his hair and his glasses in his hand, and he said it all in order without sitting down.
The clerk.
The book.
The copy he had made at nineteen and never shown anyone.
The wings.
He said it plainly, as he would have read a tide table, and I let him get to the end.
My father had gone out to the shed at the first word.
The kitchen smelled of burnt toast.
"You went behind my back," I said.
"Yes."
"You went to the one man in town who keeps the book, and you put my mother's name in it before you asked me."
"Yes," Ansel said.
"I'm telling you now."
"You're telling me after," I said.
"I know," he said.
I put down the cup I'd been holding.
My hands were not steady.
I looked at them, and then at him.
The notice from the board lay on the table between us.
Ansel had torn it from its pins on the way, and one corner was soaked.
*TOWN MEETING. Church hall, Saturday the 19th, 7 p.m. To receive a report of the selectmen concerning the keeping, and to consider the matter of Miss Odalys Pinkham, a ward of the town, held against her will by the Ledge.*
It was dated the day before.
"He moved it up," I said.
"Yes."
"It's six days."
"You see why I went," said Ansel.
"I see why you went.
"I don't see why you didn't wake me."
"You were asleep with Magnus," he said.
His face went scarlet.
"I wasn't going to knock."
I did not laugh, though I wanted to.
I stood up and walked round the table until I could see the stubble on his jaw and the ink on his thumb.
