Chapter 9: The Stair

Dally's POV

I woke in Rook's bed alone, in gray light, with his shirt folded on the pillow beside me.

I put it on, and it came to my knees.

I went up the stair barefoot to my own room.

I knew before I reached the landing that somebody had been sitting there.

The stair outside my door was worn bright in one spot.

A mug stood on the step with cold tea in the bottom of it, and a folded blanket lay beside it.

A book lay face down on the blanket, open to a page.

I picked it up.

It was a book of poems by a woman I had never heard of, and one line was underlined in pencil.

Then I heard a step on the stair below me.

"I didn't come in," Ansel said.

He stood at the turn of the stair with his glasses on their cord and his hair standing up on one side.

He was in last night's jumper, with shadows under his eyes.

"You've been here all night," I said.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"You said nobody was to come into your room while you slept," he said.

"I thought it would be better if nobody was in the corridor either.

"There was a storm, and the town's boats were out.

"I wanted you to wake up and know your door had been watched.

"It wasn't a rule.

"It was only mine."

I looked at him.

My own door key lay warm in my hand.

I had gone down to another man's bed at midnight, and Ansel had sat on the stair above it listening to the corridor, all night.
