Chapter 17: The Fifth Place, Sworn

The castle gate was shut for the night, and two guards crossed their spears in front of it.

"No petitions after dark," said the older one.

Ryota held up the card on the string around his neck so the torchlight caught it.

"It's not a petition," he said. "It's a Gold asking for audience. I'm told the king has to answer."

The guard looked at the card for a long time.

"Wait here," he said.

Ryota waited exactly as long as it took a guard to run up a hill and back.

The throne room was half dark, with candles lit only around the dais.

The king sat on the gold chair in a fur robe over his nightshirt, with his circlet on.

Lord Morvaine stood at his shoulder with the gray staff.

The throne-room stone sat at the foot of the dais.

Between two knights at the side of the hall stood Corisande, in her shirt, with iron on her wrists.

Somebody had taken her sash and her coat.

Her face was bruised along one cheekbone.

She saw him come in and her whole body went tight.

"Kishibe," she said. "Go home."
