Chapter 23: The Registry
The paper in her hand was heavier than the first.
Yuwei unfolded it slowly in the Peony Court, with the door shut and the noise of the cheering household fading down the corridor.
Chengzhou stood by the window with his back to her.
He had said nothing else since the hall of ancestors.
"What is it?" she asked.
"Read it."
It was an entry copied from the clan registry of the House of Lu, written in a fine brush hand and stamped in three places.
At the top was the name of the clan.
Below it was the column of wives of the Prince of Anbei, where a bride is entered on her wedding day.
Someone had written, in that place:
Han Yuwei.
It was not the old entry.
She had seen the old one, on the day she came, when she stood before the clan's recorder and a sword.
The old one said Han Yuwei was entered as the Prince's wife by decree of the imperial house.
It named the contract of the third month.
This said something else.
She read it twice.
It said that Han Yuwei, of her own mind and in her own name, was acknowledged by the Prince of Anbei as his wife.
