Chapter 7: The Luna's Silver
On the ninth day Lars brought me his spyglass and said, "They're doing it at noon."
I took the brass tube out onto the porch and leaned on the rail.
Across two miles of white ice, the Holmberg lodge stood on the south shore with its long timber steps.
A crowd had gathered at the foot of them, three hundred coats in black and gray.
I put the glass to my eye.
Garrick stood at the top step in his black wool coat.
Beside him, in her cream one, was Linnea.
An elder with a white braid stepped forward holding a velvet cushion.
On it lay the Luna's silver, a crescent pin as long as my hand.
It had been pinned to my coat three years ago, on a wet spring morning in front of the whole pack.
I had cried then, out of happiness.
I watched the elder lift it now and pin it to Linnea's lapel.
She bowed her head.
The pack didn't cheer.
I saw that clearly, even from two miles away, and it surprised me.
They clapped in a thin, polite way and looked at the ground.
Garrick didn't look at the pin, or at her.
He stared out across the ice, at the north shore, at the Moon Hole, at nothing.
Linnea put her hand against his cheek.
He let her, without moving, and without leaning into it.
Then she turned her face to the lake and looked across the water for a long time, and I lowered the glass.
"Seen enough?" Lars asked from the doorway.
"She's wearing my pin."
"It's a nice pin."
"Don't start."
"I'm not." He came out and leaned on the rail beside me, close enough that I felt the heat off his arm. "I'm only saying that wasn't a celebration. That was a funeral with a better coat."
