Chapter 17: The Deposit Slip
Kjersti Vang came into the credit union at ten past four on Tuesday in the camel coat.
She stood just inside the glass door and looked at the lobby.
There were nine people in line.
A woman with a stroller, two men from the feed store, and the same man with the rolled bag of coins.
I saw her through my partition, and I put my pen down.
Then I picked it up again and finished the sentence I was writing.
She walked straight to my desk and sat in the client chair without being asked.
"So this is where the help went," she said.
"Good afternoon."
"A desk. A little scarf." She touched the teal silk at my throat, lightly, with one gloved finger. "How cozy."
"Can I help you with something?"
"I'd like to open an account."
"We do that at the teller windows."
"I'd prefer to do it with you."
"I'm the staff accountant," I said. "I don't take deposits."
