Chapter 17: The Steps

I stood up and pushed my chair in.

"Answer it," I said.

Margot's thumb hung over the glass.

For one second I saw something in her face that was not triumph, and then it was gone.

She lifted the phone to her ear.

"This is Margot Aldridge," she said, and turned her chair away from me.

We walked out of the dining room, the three of us, past the housekeeper with the tray.

She pressed herself against the wall to let Zane by, and touched his sleeve.

In the cab, I called my mother.

She picked up on the first ring, with a hospital monitor beeping behind her.

"Junie, I'm on my break, you've got four minutes."

I told her in three.

There was a long silence, and the monitor beeped twice.

"That woman sits on a board," my mother said.

"I've worked twenty-six years of nights, honey."

"I know what a bad board does."

"Do it."

"Mom."

"Do it, and let them try it with the whole city watching."

"I'd like to see them explain it to the union."

Her voice cracked, just once, on the last word.
