Chapter 11: The Hangar Roof

I didn't answer her.

I walked past the quartet and out the front doors, and flew home in the dark with the mail.

Three days later, Pierce's helicopter landed on our runway.

Not the inn lawn. Our runway.

It came down right on the centerline at eleven in the morning, while the mechanic was halfway through an oil change on the Hen.

The mechanic stood in the hangar door with a wrench in his hand and his hearing aid, for once, turned on.

"Kid," he said to me. "You expecting company?"

"No."

Pierce came across the tarmac with his coat flapping.

He wasn't smiling. I had never seen him walk that fast.

"You went to the police," he said.

"I did."

"They called Kenzie at work. A detective. In front of the whole office."

"Good."

"Good?" He stopped in front of me. His face was dark red. "She was hysterical. She had to go home. Do you have any idea what you've done to her?"

Sawyer came out of the hangar wiping his hands on a rag.

He stopped a few feet behind me and to the side. Not in front of me. Just there.

Pierce's eyes went to him and stayed.

"Is this about him?"

"This is about a phone call."

"You've been living out here for a month with him. Flying around with him. The whole island talks about it. My mother has pictures, Darcy. Of you two on a wing at sunrise."

"She has a photographer on the island?"

"She has a lot of people."

Sawyer folded the rag over his shoulder.

"Mr. Delano," he said, slow and calm. "I'm going to ask you to move your helicopter. It's blocking my runway, and my mail plane leaves at noon."

"I'll move it when I'm done talking to my wife."

"You're done," Sawyer said.

He didn't raise his voice. He didn't move. But Pierce took a half-step back anyway.

Then Pierce turned to me and went quiet and pleading.

"Darce, listen to me. Whatever you think you found, it's a mistake. Kenzie wouldn't do that. She's been crying about Kit for a month. She lights a candle for her."
