Chapter 11: The Balcony

On Sunday Ye-won took Tae-oh to a night market in Mangwon with no cameras.

She had checked.

He wore a baseball cap, a gray hoodie and a pair of her father's old glasses that she had found in a drawer.

"Do I look like a regular man?" he said.

"You look like a very tall thief."

"Good."

The market ran down a narrow street under a roof of red tarps and bare bulbs.

Steam rose from every stall.

Ye-won bought two paper cups of tteokbokki and put one in his hands.

He stared at it.

"I've never eaten this standing up."

"What do you eat?"

"Things in restaurants. Things a nutritionist writes on a card."

"Well, that's over."

He ate a rice cake.

His eyes went round and bright.

"It's hot," he said, delighted. "Ye-won. It burns."

"That's the idea."

"It's wonderful."

A small girl in a pink coat tugged her mother's hand and pointed at him and whispered something.

The mother looked at him for a long second.

Then she smiled, shook her head, and led the child away.

"She knew," he said.

"She did."

"She didn't tell anyone."

"People are kinder than the internet." Ye-won licked sauce off her thumb. "Come on, I want to show you something."

They bought fish cake on a stick and hot soy milk and a paper bag of roasted chestnuts.

They sat on a curb behind the market and ate them with their legs stuck out in the road.
