Chapter 12: Closed Set

The set was a ferry cabin built inside a soundstage in Paju.

It had a narrow bed, a porthole, a rusted lamp and a rain machine hanging from the grid.

Eight people were allowed inside, and one of them was Ye-won.

The director had put Ye-won's chair beside her own, behind the monitor.

"You'll give me his face," the director said. "I'll give you whatever you need."

"I need to speak to him before the first take."

"You have four minutes."

Ye-won crossed the set in her sneakers.

Tae-oh sat on the edge of the narrow bed in a robe and a flesh-colored modesty wrap.

His hands were pressed between his knees.

Ji-seon stood by the porthole in a robe of her own, looking at him with open sympathy.

"Hey," Ye-won said.

"Hey."

He didn't look at her.

His face was already smooth.

Ye-won knelt in front of him, so that she was lower than his eyes, and the crew couldn't see her mouth.

"They won't look at you," she said. "They're not looking at you. They're looking at a ferry cabin."

"There are eight of them."

"There are eight cameras. There's only one person."

"Who?"

"Me."

His eyes finally dropped to hers.

"Don't play it for Ji-seon. Don't play it for the lens. Play it for me. Every touch is for me."

"The script says..."

"Forget the script. I'm the widow. I'm sitting right here."

She laid two fingers on her breastbone.

"When you lose me, I touch this. You breathe out and find me."
