Ye-won told him in the car.
She did not tell him all of it.
She said Ma had been on the phone in the stairwell.
She kept back what Ma had called her.
She had not decided yet whether he would ever hear it.
She said he had used the words, never says what she saw.
Tae-oh stared out of the window at the dark road.
"What did you see?" he said.
"That's what I'm asking you."
"I don't know what he means."
"Ma doesn't talk in riddles. He says exactly what he means, in a pleasant voice."
"Ye-won."
"Is there something I should know?"
He turned and looked at her.
For a heartbeat, she saw it, a door cracking open somewhere behind his eyes.
Then it shut.
"I think Ma is afraid someone sold the photo," he said.
"The hotel photo. He's been paranoid for a month."
He rubbed his eyes.
"He thinks every new face is a leak."
"And that's me."
"It's everyone."
"That isn't an answer."
"It's the one I have tonight." His voice was raw. "Please don't ask me tonight."
Ye-won looked at his hands, knotted in his lap.
She thought of the man asleep on the stairwell floor.
"Okay," she said.
"Thank you."
"Not forever."
