Chapter 4: The Gift

Corbin's office was on the top floor of the hangar, behind a glass wall that looked down on the glider.

He was standing at the window when I came in.

I shut the door and did not sit.

"Your arm-breaking has cost me a launch day, Sabine." He did not turn around. "Garrow is at the clinic. The press is asking questions."

"Garrow touched my father's coffin."

"He's a fool."

"Garrow said you knew what I was in the first week."

For a moment there was only the hum of the building.

Then Corbin turned, and his face was open and tired, and for the first time in my life I knew it was a face he had practiced.

"Yes," he said.

I had expected a lie.

I had prepared myself to take it apart.

I had not prepared for the truth, said so easily.

"Yes, I knew," he said. "I caught your scent the first night, through the suppressant, in that logistics office. It was like standing next to a furnace with the door shut. I knew you were hiding something enormous."

"And you said nothing."

"I wanted to know why you were hiding." He came toward me with his hands out. "And then I wanted you more than I wanted to know."

I looked at his hands and did not take them.

"For three years you let me tell you I was nobody."

"You wanted to be nobody. I gave you that." His voice cracked on the last word, a small, perfect crack. "Do you know how hard it is to love a woman who won't tell you her name?"
