Chapter 14: Emergency Order

The intercom rang at seven the next morning, while I was still in Rhys's shirt.

"Lobby," said the voice. "Mr. Emmett Carrow, with two officers and a physician. They have an order."

Rhys was beside me before the line went quiet.

"Don't let them up," he said into the panel.

"They have a court paper, sir. Emergency evaluation."

"For who?"

"For Ms. Rowe."

I took the paper the doorman's runner had slid under the door.

It was one page.

It said I was a danger to myself and had been confused since the fire.

It said I was to be held seventy-two hours for observation.

The physician's signature was at the bottom.

I read the name twice.

"I know him," I said.

"Annika, we are not going."

"I want his name on the record. I want to hear what he says when I ask him."

"You'll be locked in a ward."

"I'll be in a car with a witness and my phone."

I pulled on my jeans.

"Call the lawyer. Tell him to ask the judge to move the hearing up. Tell him I'll prove the order is false by noon."

Rhys put both hands on my face.

"If you aren't back by noon," he said, "I come through every door in that building."

"I know."

"I carried you out once."

"I know that too."
