Chapter 10: Nathaniel's POV
Nathaniel's POV
I watched her pickup go down the drive, and I let it.
It was the hardest thing I had done since the church steps nine years ago, and I did it standing at a window with my hands in my pockets.
An hour later I drove to Thames Street.
Danner Hardware had a green awning and a bell on the door.
Her father stood behind the register in a flannel shirt, sorting a box of brass hinges.
He looked up when the bell rang.
He did not smile.
"Mr. Aldridge."
"Mr. Danner."
"She's upstairs," he said. "She isn't coming down."
"I didn't come to see her."
"No?" He put a hinge in its drawer. "Then what can I get you?"
I looked around the shop.
Nails in bins, rope on spools, a rack of paint chips with a child's drawing taped beside it.
The drawing was of a house with a green door.
"A box of finishing nails," I said. "Two inches."
He found them without looking, set them on the counter, and rang them up.
"Four dollars and ten cents."
I gave him a ten.
He counted my change out slowly, coin by coin, in his big scarred palm.
"You drew up that deed three weeks ago," he said. "The lawyer called me Friday to say it was filed."
"Yes."
"Claire didn't know."
"No."
"You wanted her to marry you for the building?"
"No." I put the change in my pocket. "I wanted her to marry me without it."
Her father studied my face for a long time.
He had Claire's hazel eyes.
"Her mother was like this," he said at last. "When something hurt, she went quiet. She'd clean the whole house and say nothing, and then three days later she'd tell me all of it in one breath."
