Nathaniel's POV

Tiffany was standing in my front hall with a suitcase when we came home.

It was past midnight.

Claire kicked off her shoes by the stairs, looked at the suitcase, looked at Tiffany, and said, "I'll put the kettle on."

She went down the hall to the kitchen and left the door open behind her.

It was the kindest thing anyone had done for me in nine years, and she had done it without being asked.

"I've booked a train," Tiffany said. "My sister has a spare room in Ohio. I told her I'm coming and I'm bringing a baby."

"Good."

"I saw the video of the gala. Someone sent it to the guesthouse in forty seconds." She turned the suitcase handle in her hands. "Nate, I want to say it properly. I'm not going to ask you to forgive any of it."

"I wasn't going to offer."

Her mouth shook, and she steadied it. "I let her put a number on what I did to you. I took it. I told myself you'd have left anyway."

"I would have," I said.

She blinked.

"I didn't love you well," I said. "I loved the idea of a house with a person in it. You noticed. I think that is part of why you went to the guest room, and it is not the reason I held it against you."

"What was the reason?"
