Sharon's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
For six years she'd always had the last soft word, the sigh, the hand on the chest.
She looked around the room for it.
Every face looking back at her was a Burgess.
Ron didn't come to get her.
Ron was still sitting at his table with his hands flat on the cloth.
It was Jeff who stood up.
He walked over and picked up his mother's chair from the floor.
"Come on, Mom. I'll drive you home."
She stared at him.
"In what?"
"In the SUV," Jeff said. "The one Julie paid for."
He took her elbow, and after a moment she let him.
Ron got up and followed them out without a word to anybody, the gold watch catching the light on his way past.
The bride wanted the cake.
That was the first thing she said to me the next morning, on the phone, at seven a.m.
"It's already made. Four tiers. The bakery called. Dad paid the balance. I'm not letting it go in a dumpster."
"Where do you want to eat it?"
"Somewhere with no linen," she said. "And no chandeliers. And no Mattinglys except the good ones."
