Nobody breathed.
Ron laughed, too loud.
"Jeffie. Sit down. You're upset."
"I'm not upset." Jeff took his glasses off, wiped them on his tie and put them back on. "I was upset for three weeks. Now I've read the statements."
He turned to the Burgess table.
To the bride's father.
"Sir. I'm an engineer. I make eighty-two hundred a month after taxes. For six years every dollar went into an account my dad runs. He told me it was going into index funds for my daughter's college."
"Jeff," Sharon whispered.
"There was two hundred and twelve dollars in it, Mom."
He said it gently, which was somehow worse.
"The Lexus is a lease. The lake house is a rental. Both came out of my paycheck."
A woman at the Burgess table put her hand over her mouth.
"And the wedding deposits," Jeff said. "The ones that bounced."
The bride's father looked at me.
"Mrs. Mattingly. That binder."
I opened it on the white tablecloth between the bread basket and the salads.
I didn't take out my statements this time.
