Lyle read it over my shoulder.
He didn't say anything for a while.
"Is he going to fold?" he asked finally.
I thought about Jeff on the lawn in his socks, getting into my car without a word.
I thought about Jeff reading every page.
"I don't know," I said. "I really don't."
I texted back.
"Okay."
Wedgewood Hills sat at the top of a long drive lined with little lamp posts, white columns, a fountain out front.
The rehearsal dinner was in a private room off the main dining room.
Round tables, white cloths, gold chairs, a wall of windows over the eighteenth green and the parking lot beyond it.
I walked in at six with the blue binder under my arm and my one good dress on.
Every Burgess in the room turned around.
They'd all read Facebook.
The bride saw me from across the room and came straight over.
She was in a white dress with little pearl buttons, and her eyes were very bright.
"You came."
"You asked."
She squeezed my hand hard.
