The stairs to the roof went up behind a steel door I had thought was a closet.

Lachlan took a key off his ring, a different key from the others, and the lock opened without a sound.

"This building is mine," he said.

"Your landlord is a property manager. You told me."

"He is a property manager. I pay him." He pushed the door open. "I own the whole building. And the lot next to it. And the penthouse upstairs, which I never use."

I stared at him.

"Mina. I should have said it on the first day."

"You drive a Volvo with a cracked dash."

"I like the Volvo."

"You said you had student loans."

"I had them until I was thirty-three." He rubbed the back of his neck, and for the first time since I'd met him he looked embarrassed. "I invented a clamp. A tissue sealing clamp, for liver and spleen surgery. A medical company bought the whole firm four years ago."

"How much?"

"One point four billion."

The cold air blew across the roof terrace.

I started to laugh.

I couldn't stop.

I laughed so hard I had to sit down on the top step.

He stood over me with his hands in his pockets, waiting.
