Chapter 13: Silk
The night before the gala I couldn't sleep.
At one in the morning I got up and found him in the penthouse kitchen, which finally had a kettle, standing at the counter in sweatpants with a mug and a black silk tie in his other hand.
"For tomorrow," he said, holding it up. "I wasn't sure about the knot."
I took the tie from him and ran it through my fingers.
It was heavy and cool and as soft as water.
My heart was beating strangely.
"Lachlan," I said. "Tie me with it."
He went very still.
"Mina."
"I don't mean to hurt me. I don't mean to scare me. I want to put my hands up and give them to you." I swallowed. "The last time anyone tied my wrists, I didn't have a choice. I want to have one."
He put the mug down.
"You want to take it back," he said.
"Yes."
"Then we'll take it back."
He took my hand and led me to the bed.
I climbed onto the white sheets and lay on my back with my arms over my head.
He knelt beside me and wound the tie around both wrists.
His fingers were slow and exact.
He looped it twice and passed the end through the slats of the headboard, and tied a knot he could have undone in one second.
"Test it," he said.
I pulled.
It held, and it gave, and my pulse leapt in my throat, and I wasn't afraid.
I was so far from afraid that I almost laughed.
"I can end this with one breath," I said. "And I don't want to."
His eyes went dark and bright at once.
He leaned down and kissed me.
It was a long, slow kiss, with his hand flat on my sternum, and when he finally lifted his head my lips were stinging.
