Chapter 17: The Doorway

The bald partner raised his hand with the investor's, and that was two.

Ewan had not lifted his own.

"The chair abstains," he said. "I won't vote on myself."

Four votes were left on the table.

The managing partner stared at the walnut and didn't move.

Behind me, in the dark atrium, a floorboard creaked.

Then another, and then a sound coming up the stairs.

I turned my head.

They were coming over the bridges, in coats and aprons and cardigans, with their badges around their necks.

Studio A and Studio B came, then the accountants from the fourth floor, the receptionist, two security guards and a man holding a lunchbox.

They didn't speak.

They filled the glass doorway, and then the space behind it.

One hundred and forty people stood shoulder to shoulder under the skylight.

Jorie stood at the front, still in her overalls.

She walked through the door past me and stopped at the end of the table.

"I'm number nine," she said.

The investor looked at his watch.

"This is a board meeting."

"It's a vote about the guy who read my name out loud," Jorie said.

"I'd like to say one thing, and then I'll go."

Nobody stopped her.

"I came in here to hate him," Jorie said.
