Chapter 27: Caught
Nolan turned off his headlights and coasted the truck to the gate.
The chain hung loose. Somebody had unlocked it and not bothered to lock it again.
"Stay in the truck," he said.
"No."
"Meredith."
"It's my plant at noon tomorrow," I said. "I'm not sitting in a truck outside it."
He looked at me in the dark for one second.
Then he handed me the big flashlight and took the small one.
The side door by the pump room was propped open with a fire extinguisher.
The control room door was half open.
Delaney sat at the plant computer with her back to us, typing fast.
She wasn't wearing the blue dress.
She was in black leggings and a black sweater, flat as a board from her ribs to her hips.
On the chair beside her sat a round, soft, flesh-colored thing with two straps.
Her bump.
The metal wastebasket at her feet had smoke coming out of it.
A big leather tote sat open on the desk.
Nolan reached past me and flipped on every light in the room.
Delaney spun around in the chair.
Then she put the face back on.
