"Come to the house tomorrow at two," I said to the detective. "I'll give you everything."
He wrote it down in his notebook, and he did not argue.
He came at two on the dot, in the rumpled brown jacket, with a clear plastic evidence bag on his arm.
Gabe let him in and stood by the kitchen door.
The detective set the bag on the table and did not sit.
"I owe you more than an apology," he said. "I closed this as an accident on the first night because the club's lawyer called me before you did."
"I know."
"I'm reopening it. The district attorney filed an hour ago."
"On what?"
"Child abuse resulting in death. Negligent homicide. The recordings and the photograph go into the file tonight."
I heard it and felt nothing, and then I felt all of it at once.
