Chapter 22: The Last Knock
"Sit down, Mr. Dalton," the judge said, in a voice that did not rise at all.
He stayed on his feet.
"Bailiff."
The bailiff stepped forward, and Brodie sat, breathing hard through his nose.
The judge looked at Gladys for a long moment, then at the pearls scattered across the floor.
"Mrs. Dalton, you may step down."
Gladys stepped down.
She walked past me, and she left a bead behind her shoe.
"The court finds probable cause on both counts," the judge said. "The defendant is bound over for trial."
"Mr. Dalton, your release continues on conditions. You will not contact the mother of the victim, you will not go within five hundred feet of her home, and you will not drink."
"If you do any of those things, you will be arrested the same hour."
Brodie sat with his hands open on the table.
His lawyer was already packing her briefcase, not looking at him.
That night, a little after eleven, somebody started hitting my front door.
Gabe had fallen asleep on the couch with the lights low and a game on mute.
