Chapter 12: The Launch Party

The launch party was in a ballroom on the top floor of a downtown hotel.

A stage stood at one end, and round tables were set with white cloths.

I went in on crutches, in the one dress that fit over my cast.

My hair was brushed, and my good hand was on my sister's arm.

Dean walked half a step behind us, carrying nothing, saying nothing.

He had told the front desk I was his guest, and nobody questioned it.

There were two hundred people in that room.

Brynn was at the front.

She wore a green dress with her hair down.

She was laughing with a man in a gray suit, and she touched his arm as she did it.

"Table nine," Dean said quietly. "That's mine. It's near the stage."

"Good."

We sat.

A waiter brought water.

Faye took the seat next to me with her purse on her lap.

Dean sat on my other side.

At eight-thirty the lights dimmed, and a woman in a navy suit took the stage.

"Good evening, everyone. I'm told I have four minutes before the buffet closes, so I'll be brief."

Laughter.

"Three weeks ago, our sales reporting platform went down in front of a European audience. Today it's running clean in eleven countries. That happened because of the people in this room, and I want to name two of them."

She turned.

"Dean Hollander. Brynn Keating. Come up here."

Applause.

Brynn rose from her table and walked toward the stage with her hand pressed to her chest, her eyes shining.

Dean did not move.

The woman in the navy suit looked for him in the dark.
